King Henry’s Will

King Henry VIII’s final Act of Succession stated that his only son, Edward, would succeed to the English throne. In the case of Edward dying without any heirs, the throne would pass to Mary, and, if she died childless, to Elizabeth. If Elizabeth’s line also died out, Henry decreed that the crown should pass to the heirs of his younger sister, Mary. (Henry’s older sister Margaret had married the King of Scotland, an old enemy of England, so her heirs were ruled out of his will.) Mary’s eldest granddaughter was Lady Jane Grey, and in 1553 she became England’s ‘nine days’ queen’.
